Willa Cather’s My Antonia

March 1st - 12th, 2019

My Ántonia tells the story of Antonia Shimerda, a Bohemian immigrant to Nebraska in the 1880s, via a narrator, Jim Burden. It is a tale of class, of the land, of false expectations and hardy adaptation, as seen through the nostalgic eyes of Jim. After growing up enamored with Ántonia, Jim leaves Nebraska & becomes a successful lawyer. When he returns later in life to Nebraska, he finds that Ántonia — who came to this country poor and unable to speak English, survived her father’s suicide, was abandoned at the altar & gave birth out of wedlock — has achieved fulfillment in her marriage to a Czech farmer, her many children & their flourishing farm. Jim, for all his success, remains unfulfilled & searching for happiness.
